Concerts & music in Vienna - classical, jazz, indie & everything in between
Vienna and music - it's not a superficial relationship, it's a lifelong love affair with centuries of history that has lost none of its intensity to this day. Sure, you know the image: waltzes, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, white wigs. But if you think Vienna's music scene stops there, then you've done the math without the city. For anyone who loves live music, Vienna offers a spectrum that ranges from classical to indie pop, from jazz to singer-songwriters, from folk to alternative, all year round. The Musikverein is, of course, the place where Vienna scores worldwide when it comes to concerts: here, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra sounds in the Golden Hall as music should sound, namely as if the walls themselves were playing along. A visit to a concert here is not a compulsory tourist program, but a real experience, even for people who are otherwise more into other genres. The Wiener Konzerthaus in the 3rd district complements the classical program with a more open program that regularly brings contemporary music, world music and cross-border projects to the stage. If you prefer something a little less festive, the WUK is the place for you: the Werkstätten- und Kulturhaus in Währinger Straße is an institution of the alternative Viennese cultural scene, which regularly hosts concerts and live acts from all over the world in addition to visual art - from trip-hop to folk, from indie to singer-songwriter, with an audience that really listens. For jazz lovers, there is no way around Porgy & Bess: the renowned jazz club in the 1st district is considered one of the best jazz addresses in Europe and regularly brings international greats and up-and-coming artists to the stage, with a program that consistently prioritizes quality and artistic diversity. Those looking for larger live events are in good hands at the Arena Wien in the old slaughterhouse in the 3rd district: The spacious venue with indoor and outdoor stages is one of the city's most popular concert locations for national and international bands and offers the pleasant feeling of going to a real concert and not a sports hall. For the really big live shows with international stars, the Wiener Stadthalle is Austria's largest event hall, while the Gasometer in the 11th district, with its unique architecture and a capacity of around 3,600 people, creates an atmosphere for medium-sized concerts that is truly special. The great thing about Vienna is that you don't need a calendar of events to find what you're looking for spontaneously, although it helps of course: the music density is so high that there's always someone playing somewhere that's worth listening to. Take a look at our calendar of events, find your next concert experience in Vienna and then: open your ears and rausgegangen.
