Markets in Vienna: discover flea markets, design markets & pop-up events

Vienna and markets - it's a love story that has lasted for centuries and shows no signs of wearing out. Sure, the city can do coffee houses and Ringstrasse, but if you really want to understand what makes Vienna tick, then put on your sneakers, grab a jute bag and head to the markets that show this city at its liveliest. Because this is where real life happens - between vintage clothes, handmade jewelry, old porcelain and the latest street food trend that is currently inspiring half the city. The flea market at the Naschmarkt is something like the mother of all Viennese market events: every Saturday from half past six in the morning (yes, really - early birds catch the best worms here), traders and private sellers spread out what they can on the large parking lot behind the Naschmarkt on Kettenbrückengasse. Antiques, vinyl records, old postcards, designer pieces from the 80s and odds and ends that don't really deserve a name but somehow still fascinate you - you'll find things you've never looked for, and that's exactly the point. If you like things a little more structured, the WAMP design market is the place to be: several times a year, the forecourt of the MuseumsQuartier is transformed into a meeting place for creative minds, where local designers and artists present their unique handmade items - from jewelry and fashion to home accessories that you can really only get here. Free admission, better bring your wallet. Similar principle, different stage: the Edelstoff Designmarkt takes place several times a year in the impressive Marx Halle in the 3rd district - exhibitors from Germany and abroad gather on 4,000 square meters and show that "handmade" doesn't have to mean that it looks like an afternoon of handicrafts. For those who prefer to browse on a smaller scale and want to get to know the nooks and crannies of the city, we recommend the 7*Stern flea market organized by the RahatLook collective in the cultural center of the same name in the 7th district - vintage fashion from several decades, a DJ set in the background and a crowd that knows exactly what it's doing. The great thing about Vienna is that the market culture here is not an elitist thing, but really works for everyone. Pop-up markets pop up regularly in various neighbourhoods, organized by creative collectives and attended by a diverse urban community. If you want to keep track of which events are coming up, a good calendar of events is a good place to start - because Vienna never sleeps for long when it comes to discovery. The METAMarkt on the METAStadt factory site in the 22nd district is open every Saturday and Sunday and offers a colorful mix of flea markets and second-hand treasures that you won't find anywhere else. In short: markets in Vienna are not a must-see for tourists, but a real lifestyle. They are proof that shopping can be fun even without a shopping center and loyalty card - and that the best finds are usually the ones you didn't even expect.
