Sheen Trio featuring Satoko Fujii & Natsuki Tamura
Following a concert tour through Japan, the Sheen Trio will perform at the BLACK BOX at cuba alongside two of the most distinctive voices on the Japanese jazz and improvisation scene: Satoko Fujii and her longtime musical partner Natsuki Tamura. In this collaborative concert, two musical languages come together—languages shaped by cultural migration, the crossing of boundaries, and the search for new sonic spaces. At the same time, the musicians continue the musical dialogue that began during the Sheen Trio’s tour of Japan.
Sheen Trio
The name “Sheen Trio” refers to the sixteenth letter of the Persian alphabet—the same letter with which the name of the bandleader, Shabnam Parvaresh, begins. The clarinetist, originally from Tehran—who initially played in the Tehran Symphony Orchestra and came to Germany in 2014 to study jazz clarinet—founded the Sheen Trio in 2020 together with Ula Martyn-Ellis (guitar) and Philipp Buck (drums), founded the Sheen Trio. Their music resembles a sonic journey: at times calm and contemplative, at other times impulsive and adventurous, always in search of undiscovered places.
Following their acclaimed debut album*Gozar*(2023, Berthold Records), the trio followed up in 2026 with*Transitory*(Unit Records), an album that explores what change sounds like and weaves personal memories with global upheavals. The press is enthusiastic: Jazzpodium highlights the trio’s suspenseful dramaturgy and highly precise ensemble playing, while Jazzthing praises the music’s rich contrasts, which build bridges across divides.
NatSat Duo – Satoko Fujii & Natsuki Tamura
Since 1997, the collaboration between Natsuki Tamura (trumpet) and Satoko Fujii (piano) has been thrilling audiences worldwide. Their repertoire ranges from complete improvisation to Tamura’s deeply beautiful, world-music-inspired compositions and Fujii’s pieces with their complex meters, lines, and harmonies. With just two instruments, they create a sonic range spanning from a quiet Japanese folk song to the outburst of what seems like a massive ensemble. The duo has thrilled audiences at jazz festivals in London, Vancouver, Italy, Montreal, and numerous other locations around the world.
Satoko Fujii, born in Tokyo in 1958, is regarded by critics and audiences alike as one of the most original voices in contemporary jazz. After a classical education, she turned to improvisation and studied at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory with George Russell and Paul Bley. With over 100 albums as a bandleader, she has shaped some of the most creative ensembles in the world of improvised music. Her music lies at the intersection of jazz, contemporary classical, rock, and traditional Japanese music.
