Christianity and Hinduism meet on this evening in terms of content and music: thoughts on birth and dying, death and redemption; tonalities, scales, rhythms - so alien and yet so close. In the program, the baroque "Musikalische Exequien" by Heinrich Schütz, an early Protestant requiem in German, will be juxtaposed with improvisations of Carnatic music. The prayers of South India, which are over 1000 years old, resound in melodic phrases, modal tonality (ragas) and cyclical rhythms (talas). Both musical traditions unite the human voice with all its abilities and subtleties between pitches, harmonies and articulations - a special encounter between historically inspired Baroque performance practice and authentic Indian temple music on the question: What breaks the cycle of death?
Program:
Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672): Musikalische Exequien (SWV 279-281) and Carnatic temple music from different centuries (texts in Sanskrit):
Prelude: Cycle of Life (Nada Brahma); Musical Exequies (Part Ia, Kyrie); Interlude (Plea to God Shiva for Salvation); Musical Exequies (Part Ib and Part II; Interlude (Hearing - Transformation by Shiva); Musical Exequies (Part III); Postlude
