In the Victorian era, at the turn of the century, rival magicians Robert Angier and Alfred Borden meet. However, friendly, youthful competition soon turns into something much worse, because not only does each envy the other's talent, Robert's wife also dies during one of Alfred's risk-taking tricks. For years, they stalk and fight each other, tearing down their entire environment just to find out about each other's tricks. In the end, the two don't even shy away from murder, because the "Prestige", the unbelievable final part of a perfect magic trick, is worth every effort...
