Amsterdam, Keizersgracht 289. An unpaid gas bill from 1944 lies in front of a young woman’s apartment door. How did it get there, and who is responsible for paying it? Clueless, the young woman sets out in search of answers and sinks deeper and deeper into the horrors of the German occupation. The Jewish woman, born in Israel, loses her footing and wonders what this bill is doing in her life. Why are people at the supermarket suddenly looking at her differently?

In this play, Israeli author Maya Arad Yasur combines humorous abysses with abysmal humor. Various voices unravel a mystery spanning the past and present, identity and origin. They not only discuss how we deal with our history and questions of integration, but also expose the contradictions inherent in memory. Director Antonie Zschoch and her team uncover connections that fall through the cracks of historiography yet still haunt us.
