Stegreif Orchester: freemahler – what the earth tells us

1 Earth – 11 musicians – 111 melodies: With “freemahler – What the Earth Tells Us,” the Stegreif Orchestra explores the music of Gustav Mahler, which powerfully captured the beauty of nature more than a hundred years ago. A beauty that could already be largely lost in another hundred years if the Earth continues to change so drastically due to human-induced climate change. The program includes references to various works by Mahler, all of which are united by the common theme of nature. The result is a multifaceted reflection on Mahler’s musical world at this pivotal moment in time.

Stegreif is an improvisational symphony orchestra composed of genre-crossing musicians that opens up new approaches to classical music. The recompositions blend the musical heritage with contemporary influences and improvisation. The orchestra performs without a conductor, without sheet music, and without chairs—and this freedom is used for improvisation, movement, and direct interaction.
