Powerful culture

With her combination of indigenous traditions, Latin American folk songs, jazz and rock, US-Mexican Lila Downs occupies an exceptional position. "Cambias mi mundo" (You change my world), her new album and stage program, is a return to her roots with catchy original compositions. Lila Downs is the daughter of a US-Scottish father and a mother from the Mixtec people, one of the most important indigenous peoples in Mexico. Her childhood dream was to become an opera singer, but through anthropological studies she immersed herself deeply in the history of her ancestors: she discovered the still living myths, the lyrics rich in imagery - a powerful culture that became the driving force behind her own music. The aim of the multiple Grammy winner is to make the languages and traditions of the Mixtec, Zapotec, Nahuatl, Maya and Purepecha known internationally. In doing so, she combines the native elements with a contemporary sound language.
