Campus Kino: Tunnel der Freiheit

On August 13, 1961, Berlin was divided by the construction of the Berlin Wall. One year later, 29 people from the GDR managed a spectacular escape to West Berlin through a 135-meter-long tunnel. For months, West Berlin students had secretly dug the escape tunnel—out of solidarity, love, and political conviction, and at constant risk to their lives.

The project was financed, in part, by the sale of film rights to the U.S. television network NBC. The resulting historical footage forms the centerpiece of the documentary. “Tunnel of Freedom” combines this unique archival material with the memories of those involved and powerfully tells a story of courage, solidarity, and the unwavering desire for freedom. Prior to the screening, there will be a discussion with Anna von Arnim-Rosenthal (Berlin Wall Foundation). Following the screening, tunnel builder and eyewitness Joachim Neumann, as well as author Maja Nielsen, will discuss the historical events.
