When Marissa loses her mother at the age of six, she moves to Thailand with her father. There she meets Arielle, and a unique friendship develops between the two girls. Years later, Marissa is once again caught up by the forces of nature and the ghosts of her past in vibrant New York. Over the course of two fateful days, she must learn how to hold her own in an uncertain world when memories keep pulling her back into the depths. Tara Menon's novel "Underwater" is a sensitive account of the pain that remains when a very special connection is lost. A heartbreaking and poetic story about grief, healing and the courage to resurface.

Tara K. Menon, born in India and raised in Singapore, is a lecturer in English literature at Harvard. After ten years in New York, she now lives in Somerville, Massachusetts. Her debut novel has been critically acclaimed as a "gripping and heartbreaking work".
