Bilderechos aus Peru

In the organizer's words:

Intimate portraits, everyday scenes and documentary images - the historical photographs and sound recordings of Hans Heinrich Brüning (1848 - 1929) still resonate strongly in Peru today and open up new perspectives on identity, memory and cultural self-determination. The multimedia collection of the German amateur researcher was created during his 50-year stay in the Lambayeque region, where he documented the cultural history and life of the local people with passionate interest.

The collaborative exhibition explores the reinterpretations of local actors, scientists and artists who transform these colonial documents into living archives. Afro-Peruvian or queer interpretations are just as much a part of the dialog as the artistic photoceramics by Enzo Miguel Matute or the embroidered interventions by Marystela Camacho.

In the digital age, new forms of appropriation and participation are also emerging as communities continue to develop historical images and music online. The exhibition shows how Brüning's archive continues to generate resonance across generations and borders.

In collaboration with Prof. Gisela Cánepa (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú) and Dr. Walther Maradiegue (Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn), the exhibition sheds light on processes of cultural re-appropriation that transcend the boundaries of the museum archive. Especially in the digital age, new opportunities for appropriation and democratic participation are opening up when local communities use and develop historical photos and music online. The collaborative exhibition shows how engaging with Brüning's archive creates social relationships and resonates across generations and geographical boundaries.

The exhibition takes place as part of the 9th Triennial of Photography Hamburg 2026. Funded by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg "Ministry of Culture and Media".
