In the dark, there is a rumble among the ferns. Moorburg is under threat. For decades, the small village in the north of Harburg has feared being swallowed up by the port. Squeezed between a refinery and a highway, crossed by huge power lines, the small patch of moorland is fighting against the construction of a highway extension that is to be laid right through the countryside. Construction has since been halted following protests from local residents and conservationists, but the plans continue and the fate of the moor remains uncertain.

For the fourth edition of Night Shifts, artists Rosanna Graf and Jonathan Penca turn their attention to this special and endangered area of land, which provides a habitat for strictly protected moor frogs and toads. In their performance Nature Found Them Guilty, inspired by new forms of ecological thinking such as dark ecology (see: Morton; Kingsnorth), they turn to horror film, a genre that has always dealt with the limits of human perception in relation to more-than-human worlds.

During an evening hike through the moor, a video in the style of a B-horror movie is shot together with the audience. Inspired by 1970s revenge-of-nature filmsin which nature remembers, fights back and strikes back, the work makes use of the genre's exaggerated visual language and dramaturgy. The audience is invited to become an active part of the film and take on roles from the script during the night walk.

As the sun sets on the horizon of the moorland landscape, two reporters try to solve the disappearance of several road construction workers. Their trail leads them past bubbling waters and mysterious piles of scrap metal to the planned highway route, where peat-cutting city servants, shady bureaucrats and rebellious bikers clash. Dark clouds are gathering, while behind the toad fence something is stirring that is no longer just observing.
