Together, they interpret traditional music from Eastern Europe, exploring the musical and cultural connections between Jewish music, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Greece, and Turkey. With historical awareness and a contemporary sensibility, Atsind reflects on the shared stories woven through diverse musical traditions, and on the power of sound to connect past and present, people and place.
Atsind is about the dialogue between the violin and the accordion. The duo delves deeper into the textures, modes, and narratives of traditional music, offering a program that takes the audience on a journey through time and space.
Nicolaas Cottenie(BE) is a violinist and composer trained in jazz who has spent many years focusing on Eastern European folk music traditions. His musical journey has taken him across Europe, performing and researching the cultural roots of the Eastern European repertoire. His interest in modal music and intercultural dialogue shapes a distinctive playing style that bridges traditional forms with a contemporary, exploratory spirit.
Ira Shiran(IL) is an accomplished accordionist with experience ranging from classical music to theater, and he has focused on Romanian and Bulgarian music for many years. A graduate of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, he brings emotional depth and rhythmic precision to the duo’s performances.
