Four works, four worlds—linked by the search for humanity and expressiveness in times of existential challenge. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Overture to “Fidelio” opens the evening with a heroic gesture: a passionate plea for courage, freedom, and hope. A new work by Danish composer Matias Vestergård Hansen, commissioned jointly by two Danish orchestras and the Osnabrück Symphony Orchestra, adds a contemporary touch. The piano part is performed by Danish pianist Gustav Piekut. Lukas Foss’s “Elegy for Anne Frank,” which connects memory and the present, pain and dignity, serves as a quiet counterpoint. This exploration of Anne Frank’s legacy is the conceptual continuation of our first music theater production, the world premiere of “Peter van Pels” by Anno Schreier. Arthur Honegger’s Symphony No. 3, composed in the wake of the horrors of World War II, concludes the evening as a powerful call for peace and humanity.
