Max Cady (Robert De Niro) spent 14 years of his life in prison after being accused of a brutal rape. But his public defender, Samuel Bowden (Nick Nolte), had withheld exculpatory evidence during the trial, which is why Cady seeks revenge after his release. He rapes the lawyer’s mistress, kills the family dog, and terrorizes Bowden’s wife. In doing so, the vengeful ex-convict takes meticulous care to act in such a way that he cannot be prosecuted. Soon, Bowden, too, resorts to taking the law into his own hands...
