Under the guidance ofOliver Sin, an internationally renowned artist and author of the standard works “Drawing the Head for Artists” and “Facial Expressions for Artists,” you’ll learn the art of expressive portrait drawing. As a professor with over 25 years of experience at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Oliver Sin teaches techniques for creating lively and character-filled portraits with charcoal.

The workshop will be held in English with German translation.

March 12–14, 2027 (Fri–Sun), 11:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

7 hours per day (including a 1-hour lunch break) — 6 effective instructional hours daily, for a total of 18 hours.

What to Expect

Develop a deep understanding of human anatomy and portrait composition through Oliver Sin’s distinctive charcoal technique. Learn how to bring depth and life to the page through precise line work, tonal values, and the deliberate use of light and shadow. Step by step, you’ll create portraits that combine technical mastery with emotional expression.

• Day 1: Understanding head structure, proportion, and gesture through charcoal studies
• Day 2: Developing tonal areas and textures, as well as dynamic expression
• Day 3: Creating an expressive charcoal portrait that combines depth, emotion, and individual character.

By the end of the workshop, you will confidently draw expressive charcoal portraits that captivate with their clear anatomical structure, atmospheric depth, and individual character.

Oliver Sinis an internationally recognized portrait artist and author of the standard works *Drawing the Head for Artists* and *Facial Expressions for Artists*. Through his more than 25 years of teaching at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, he has perfected a method that combines solid academic structures with expressive drawing approaches. He is known for showing artists how to achieve not only anatomical accuracy but also character and expressive visual language in their work.
