The professional chamber choir Vox Quadrata and the Kammerphilharmonie Mannheim build a musical bridge between the baroque music of Johann Sebastian Bach and the contemporary sounds of Mårten Jansson. Bach's Magnificat is one of his most popular and successful settings. In the first version of the piece, which was performed during Advent in 1723, the Leipzig composer included four Christmas carols as short interludes between the movements. The renowned Swedish composer Mårten Jansson has now written contemporary interludes that contrast with Bach's work and open up a different sonority. The American poet Charles Anthony Silvestri has also written the contemporary texts.
The musical prelude to the evening will be Bach's cantata "Es erhub sich ein Streit". This will be followed by a 20-minute discussion between Bach experts Michael Maul and Bernhard Schrammek, in which they will talk about the genesis of Bach's Magnificat and the long tradition of interludes.
In cooperation with the Bach Archive Leipzig.
Program:
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750): Es erhub sich ein Streit (BWV 19); Magnificat in D with four interludes by Mårten Jansson (*1965)
