Sun-Mi Hong's NOCTILUME

We were able to experience the potential, musical expansion and adventurous spirit of Sun-Mi Hong over the last few weeks: the South Korean drummer and composer led a few sessions with us and gave a stunning concert with the all-star foursome Jermyn-Viner-Hébert-Hong, which sounded as if the four-piece had been around forever. And yet Su-Mi Hong had only met one of the band members minutes before the sound check. Perhaps she simply has the gift of making people trust her quickly. And rightly so. Now she presents herself with a quartet called Noctilume. Her instincts are also in demand in this project, and her speed of reaction is crucial.

Amsterdam-based Sun-Mi Hong, who is currently artist-in-residence at Villa Waldberta on Lake Starnberg at the invitation of the City of Munich, is once again focusing on experimentation and is keen to engage with her fellow players in an open-ended way. They are the German-Japanese guitarist Keisuke Matsuno, the Irish bassist Simon Jermyn and the Danish alto saxophonist Mette Rasmussen. Together they want to explore sound spaces that open up between fixed structures and open forms, contrasting acoustic and electronic sounds and allowing clear soundscapes to flow into unfathomably iridescent ones.
