Rundgang: Wohnen im alten und neuen Altona

In the organizer's words:

Old and New Altona – Stories of Displacement and Gentrification: A Walking Tour of Building, Housing, and Life.

For 200 years now, Altona has been running out of space time and again. On this walking tour, we’ll encounter stories of redensification, displacement, and gentrification. The route leads from the historic industrial complex of the former Feldtmann wire pin factory in Ottensen, past the Reform-style buildings of the 1920s and 1930s, all the way to the Neue Mitte Altona. As we make our way through the neighborhood, the urban development up to the present day becomes clear: from the working-class neighborhood with commercially used backyards to the large-scale planned new development area on the site of the former Altona freight yard. Whenever possible, controversial, current urban planning projects and neighborhood initiatives will be included in the tour and can be discussed further at the end point, Café Blaue Blume.

  • Meeting point: Ottensen District Archive, Zeißstr. 28
  • End point: Central Altona, Bus 30, Eva-Rühmkopf-Straße stop
  • Price: Open Monument Day—free admission
  • No registration required

A historian will guide you through her neighborhood. Drawing on in-depth knowledge of local history and current development plans, she’ll lead you on exploratory walks off the beaten path. Photos, maps, and eyewitness accounts from our archive will help you uncover the area’s history as you go.
