Renata Lucas – a minor course correction
In the organizer's words:
How do built environments shape our perception, behavior and social interactions? With her conceptual works, Brazilian artist Renata Lucas intervenes in existing situations, built architecture and social spaces to address these questions. Her new exhibition at the Dortmunder Kunstverein, a minor course correction, refers to the urban and structural changes to the former Union Brewery site around the institution. Until 2020, the self-managed skate park "Utopia" was located here, which brought together a large Dortmund skate community in the creative center of the city. For the exhibition, Lucas will transform her work Falha (2003/2024) into a kind of skate landscape to recreate - at least temporarily - a piece of counterculture on the U-Areal. The architecture of the Kunstverein, always on the threshold between interior and exterior space, is of particular importance here. The exhibition title a minor course correction also refers methodically to Renata Lucas' approach to her own work - its multimedia repurposing as a platform for sound, interaction and performance - as well as to the artist's role in constantly questioning the established and creating structures that enable social encounters, participation and change.
Renata Lucas (* 1971 in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil) has participated internationally with her site-specific interventions in documenta (2012) and the biennials in Istanbul (2011), Venice (2009) and Sao Paulo (2006), among others. She has had solo exhibitions at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, São Paulo (2024), Performance Space New York, New York (2019); Secession, Vienna (2014), among others. In Germany, she received the Schering Stiftung Art Award in 2009 and has since been present at KW in Berlin with a permanent installation.
