UNHEARD: Percusiano

The piano can also be a percussion instrument and percussion instruments can be played quite piano-like. The duo Percusiano with Ilja Ruf (on piano and clarinet) and Max Gerwien (percussion) already indicates with its imaginary name that various sound generators, but also personalities, musical sources and functions merge inseparably here.

Ilja Ruf and Max Gerwien met in 2020 during their bachelor studies at the Popakademie Mannheim and quickly realized that they have similar musical ticks. The chemistry between the two was clear from their first performance together at the Tamburi Mundi Frame Drum Festival. This year, the duo made it to the final 5 at the Burghausen European Young Jazz Award.

With percussion instruments and rhythms from different cultures and a very special treatment of the piano, Percusiano create their very own lively, vibrant cosmos in which surprises lurk around every corner.

The Unheard series already celebrated successes at the Unterfahrt in 2019 and 2021 and is now being continued this year with eight concerts in Halle 4 at Einstein Kultur. Developed as a project with the JazzStiftung München and curated by Unterfahrt and mucjazz e.V., the program is dedicated to providing a forum for promising young musicians from various competitions (including the Munich Jazz Prize) and giving them the attention they have long deserved.
