Homecoming

“I want to go home!” 87-year-old Anna cries out repeatedly. People of advanced age often express themselves this way. It is not always a desire to embark on their final journey, but rather to return to their childhood and homeland. The musical theater production*heim-kehr*explores the question of what or who provided protection during childhood despite life’s obstacles. *heim-kehr*also signifies, accompanied by four children, a return to language—to the place where silence threatened to take hold.

PAPILLONS Theater Ensemble

PAPILLONS is the “extraordinary” and “wondrous” (SZ Magazin) theater ensemble consisting of 11 performers—most of whom have dementia—from the “Am Kreuzberg” nursing home in Berlin, professional artists, and volunteers; founded and artistically directed by Christine Vogt since 2016. Children also participate from time to time.

This pioneering work, rooted in long-term care, is conceived as an art project grounded in new music, performance art, and biographical-documentary theater.  The diverse audience experiences the performances in an unusual setting: the F2 Theater within the nursing home, where specific theatrical forms are explored and viewed as an artistic and aesthetic asset to the theater scene. Through the predominantly biographical work with the performers, personal stories are brought to life on stage and “history” is passed on. Elderly people, sometimes forgotten, are heard. Their dignity is (re)restored.

The linked video shows highlights from our musical theater production “Totenwache” (2025) and offers an atmospheric glimpse into the ensemble’s working methods.
