Mom, Dad, I’m Gay
In the organizer's words:
Hofkino - Open-Air Cinema at FMP1 - We're screening a selection of political films, followed by a discussion!
You can find the full program for this year’s Hofkino here.
Director Lia Jaqeli, born in 1951, studied philology and worked in various professions, including as a senior researcher at the Caucasus House from 1986 to 2002. Lia Jaqeli has been an advocate for human rights since 1999. As an accomplished documentary filmmaker, she sheds light on the lives and struggles of women and other marginalized groups; her films are extensively and effectively integrated into educational programs by various international and local organizations.
Her film“Mom, Dad, I’m Gay”tells the personal stories of young gay and lesbian Georgians who are fighting for a life of dignity despite fierce criticism from the influential Orthodox Church and nationalists. The documentary was filmed in Tbilisi in the run-up to the first IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia).
The second film of the evening,“2014,” focuses on one of the most well-known cases of femicide in Georgia. Going beyond the crime itself and the grief it causes, Lia highlights how such crimes are exacerbated by loopholes in the law, incompetence on the part of law enforcement agencies, and societal indifference.
Prior to the screenings, the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation is organizing a panel discussion with film director Lia Jaqeli and Anna Dziapshipa, a founding board member of the Documentary Association Georgia. The panel discussion will be moderated by Tamar Qeburia, a historian at the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) in Regensburg.
