acoustic chamber jazz
free for change isa crossover project featuring compositions by Darmstadt-based guitarist Stefan Hladek, a graduate of the Academy of Music in Darmstadt and the Royal Academy of Music in London. For 18 years, he was the creative force behind the renowned Barrios Guitar Quartet, and now, at the Stadtkirche Darmstadt, he presents his own compositions from the debut album “free for change”—along with Cathrin Ambach (flute), Kalin Yanchev (guitar & quintbass), and his brother Alexander Hladek (drums, percussion, and vibraphone), at the Stadtkirche Darmstadt. The program is rounded out with pieces by Roger Eno and Tigran Hamasyan. Together, the musicians—performing in varying lineups ranging from a duo to a quartet—present a wide range of sonic variations with the finesse of acoustic chamber music, stylistically spanning European classical music, world music, and contemporary jazz. The ensemble is characterized by a penchant for unconventional time signatures, powerful rhythms, imaginative improvisations, and subtle dynamics.
