An electric shock in the port of Valencia. A young man lies between copper cables, sea air and a future that is already over. Dana Grigorcea begins her novel with an accident, but does not write about death. She writes about summer, which, as we all know, is the only time of year when even omens smell of cherries. In "Dancing Woman, Blue Cockerel" (Penguin), Roxana remembers the summers of her childhood in Buşteni, Romania. Two hours by train from Bucharest and yet a different world: a woman moves out of her house because a cherry tree suddenly grows inside. Nobody wants to miss an episode of the telenovela "The Slave Isaura", and if they do, the plot is passed on - differently each time. In the midst of this slightly slippery cosmos, Roxana meets Camil, the boy from the railroad settlement who dreams of Spain and a career as a soccer player - and eventually disappears.

Dana Grigorcea writes about first kisses, false hopes and the stories that people keep telling each other until no one knows what really happened.

Born in Bucharest in 1979, the author now lives in Zurich. She has received numerous awards for her novels; most recently she was shortlisted for the German Book Prize with "Die nicht sterben".
