JOANA TISCHKAU & JEREMY NEDD & SOPHIE YUKIKO / MALPASO DANCE COMPANY Trapicana

In the organizer's words:

Few artists expose prevailing thought patterns as precisely and humorously as Joana Tischkau. The choreographer and director was awarded the Tabori Prize for productions of The Lion King or Pina Bausch and Schwarze Schlagerstars, and was last a guest at the Summer Festival in 2022. Together with choreographer Jeremy Nedd, also a celebrated and multiple Summer Festival guest, Tischkau is now creating a large dance evening about authenticity and exoticization for the Cuban Malpaso Dance Company. Since its foundation in 2012, the company has toured internationally with an impressive repertoire ranging from Martha Graham to Malpaso founders Osnel Delgado and Daile Carrazanabi's Aszure Barton, Ohad Naharin and Mats Ekund, most recently premiering a piece at the Summer Festival in 2018.Based on the iconic revue theater Tropicana, which was founded in Havana in the 1930s, Tischkau and Nedd show how tourism and cultural exploitation can become a trap, satirically address Eurocentric perspectives and use trap music, a hip-hop subgenre that emerged in Atlanta's black communities in the 1990s and moves between racist stereotypes and cultural reality. Choreographies for the Malpaso dancers, revue references and deliberate exaggeration of clichés create a highly dynamic stage work that plays with expectations and at the same time subverts them in an entertaining way.
