Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch star in this reimagining of the 1989 film classic “The War of the Roses,” based on the novel of the same name by Warren Adler.
Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch) lead a seemingly perfect life: Not only do they enjoy all the perks that come with successful careers, but on top of that, they also have a harmonious marriage and a happy family—or so it seems. But as is often the case, appearances can be deceiving. For when the two, so to speak, switch roles—Theo’s professional career suddenly suffers a bitter setback, while Ivy’s career experiences an unexpected upswing—it quickly becomes clear that not much of their former harmony will remain for long. A heated conflict erupts between the two, marked by growing competitiveness, repressed and therefore unresolved tensions, and differing values. And before long, the two are no longer just hurling words at each other…
