Spring 1945: World War II is still raging, but on the small North Sea island of Amrum, the residents don’t notice much of it. True, there isn’t enough to eat anymore, but thanks to the down-to-earth farmer’s wife Tessa (Diane Kruger), the fields are still being tended, so at least there are potatoes. She’s also helped with the planting by 12-year-old Nanning (Jasper Billerbeck), who has fled to the island from his hometown of Hamburg with his mother Hille (Laura Tonke), two younger siblings, and a newborn baby. There, however, they do not live in poverty, for the father is a high-ranking official in the Nazi regime—a status that brings both advantages and disadvantages: The family has enough food ration cards, but the swastika flag flying in front of their house makes them outsiders on the island. This is because most of the taciturn residents have merely tolerated the regime rather than actively supported it, and they long for the war to end. Hark Bohm, born in Hamburg in 1939, grew up on Amrum himself and drew on his childhood memories to write a novel, which his friend Fatih Akin has now adapted into a film.
