Flowers of evil

Kazuki Yamada is Chief Conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin from the 2026/27 season. They will perform at the Elbphilharmonie together with Canadian cello star Jean-Guihen Queyras and a program of exciting contrasts: Henri Dutilleux's cello concerto unfolds as delicately as the music in Hector Berlioz's famous "Symphonie fantastique" is wild and unleashed. In keeping with the Musikfest motto "Sex, Drugs & Rock'n'Roll", Berlioz's music sends a young artist in love from his first happy crush via a furious ball into an opium frenzy with a hellish ride to the Last Judgement. The composer was inspired by his crush on the actress Harriet Smithson - who was so impressed by the music that she wanted to meet Berlioz and the two actually married.
