This season, our“Berlin Philharmonic Ensembles”series is dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven, the 200th anniversary of whose death will be observed in 2027. His “Great Fugue” is overwhelmingly modern and expressive—which somewhat overwhelmed Beethoven’s contemporaries. Not so Felix Mendelssohn: Shortly after Beethoven’s death, the 18-year-old composed his Opus 13, in which he alludes repeatedly to the music of his great role model, including the “Great Fugue.” The program opens with Beethoven showing his humorous side—with the Serenade in D major and theduet featuring two obligatory pairs of spectacles.
