Sometimes the search leads back to one’s own childhood and first love; other times, it delves deep into family history or into the buried memories of an entire region. Annika Büsing’s novel*Magisch*tells of a return to the Ruhr region, of first love, sibling bonds, and the question of how to confront conflicts within one’s own family. In*Im Licht des neuen Tages*, Jarka Kubsova weaves the present and the past into a moving story about memory, women’s freedom, and the search for truth. In*Frieda*, Geraldine Oetken sets out to trace the life of a great-great-aunt who had long been kept secret and asks what family silence has to do with our present.
