Saltwater Surf Movie Night is back—and in 2026, it’ll once again turn all of Germany into an open-air movie screen. From Hamburg to Munich, from Berlin to Cologne, this popular outdoor film festival brings the magic of the sea to where it’s enjoyed most: under the starry sky, with like-minded people, and with the sound of the waves in your ears. All screenings will be shown in the original language with English subtitles.
Whether you surf yourself or simply love the ocean—this film tour will fill your heart with saltwater. Let’s celebrate the ocean—together!
In 2026, the spotlight will be on two extraordinary surf films that transport audiences to remote coastlines and moving life stories. Here we go:
Against Gravity
Leon Glatzer—born in Hawaii, raised in Costa Rica, and now living in Germany—is one of Germany’s best-known professional surfers and one of the few to have competed in the Olympic Games. The 77-minute documentary by director Matt Pain accompanies him on a candid look back at his career: the formative years by the sea, the ups and downs of a career in professional sports, and the question of what freedom in surfing truly means. Not a traditional surf movie—but a personal portrait.
Waves Without Limits – The Spirit of Adaptive Surfing
The film by director Annika Zimmermann explores the world of adaptive surfing—a branch of the sport in which people with physical disabilities take to the waves. The focus isn’t on the extraordinary as a spectacle, but on the everyday experience of the ocean: the training, the community, and the sport itself. A matter-of-fact yet moving look at surfing beyond the professional circuit.
