“Romería radiates such warmth that it’s probably the most beautiful and sincere film of the year.” (Cineuropa)
After her parents died of AIDS at a young age, 18-year-old Marina was raised by her mother’s family in Catalonia. Now she travels to Vigo on the Galician Atlantic coast to meet her father Fon’s family for the first time and to see with her own eyes where her parents lived out the brief, passionate chapter of their love in the 1980s—a time of upheaval following the end of the Franco dictatorship.
With *ROMERÍA*, Carla Simón—whose own parents also died young of AIDS—completes her autobiographically inspired family trilogy, following the internationally award-winning films *ESTIU 1993* (2016) and *ALCARRÀS* (2022). Common to all three films are the tenderness with which she portrays her heroes and heroines, the magnificent family scenes, the consistently deliberate narrative perspective, and a sincerity and immediacy that irresistibly draw us into the story.
