Niñxs - Das Leben glitzert

Over a period of eight years, the director follows trans teenager Karla in the small Mexican town of Tepoztlán. The camera witnesses Karla's development, from the first steps of transition to her coming of age. In an environment where traditional values and the reality of a queer identity clash time and again, Karla and the filmmaker find each other in conversations characterized by openness, empathy and mutual trust. The result is intimate portraits of their friendship, but also authentic insights into Karla's hopes, doubts and her search for acceptance. At the same time, director Kani Lapuerta opens up a cinematic world in which documentary observations and imaginative sequences intertwine, blurring the boundaries between reality and fantasy. "Niñxs" is a life-affirming, courageous tale about self-determination, belonging and the strength to go one's own way, and invites us to connect with Karla's world and dreams.
