***MIDWIFE

Madeline Johnston is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer who currently lives in southern Colorado. Previously, she was based in Denver for over a decade, where she developed her distinctive sound and was deeply involved in the local art and music scene. Her project Midwife was born in 2014 during her time at the legendary DIY cultural space Rhinoceropolis.

Live, Johnston is known for her minimalist, emotionally charged blend of experimental pop and atmospheric sound art, which can fill entire rooms with a tense silence. On her recordings, she creates multi-layered, dense soundscapes, carving out a niche all her own within the realm of heavy and experimental music.

She describes her style as “Heaven Metal”—emotional music about destruction, loss, and catharsis. At the heart of her songwriting lies grief in all its facets and manifestations. With great sensitivity and haunting intensity, Johnston explores the different faces of loss, pain, and healing.
