Post-rock fans who might be hesitant to venture down musical paths with overly restrained rhythms or a lack of dynamic outbursts can breathe a sigh of relief: Withjeffk, they’ve found the heroes they’ve been waiting for.

Their sound is groove-driven, bass-heavy instrumental music with metal roots that also skillfully incorporates elements of traditional, driving rock.

The trio format demands a certain compositional tightness, which means the chemistry between the musicians plays a crucial role. The result is a fusion of a powerful groove driven by bass and drums and atmospheric post-rock textures. By combining drone concepts with riff-based rock, jeffk create soundscapes, that use repetition as a means to both overwhelm the listener and induce a cathartic physical release (outside the world of post-rock, this is commonly called “dancing”).

The band takes the time needed to build up their rhythmic patterns, yet every song always feels purposeful and builds toward a gripping finale. Attentive listeners will also be fascinated by the ease with which the bass shifts between providing a rhythmic foundation and accentuating guitar melodies, thus serving as a unifying element between two distinct styles.

rýris a Berlin-based instrumental post-metal band whose name is derived from the Icelandic word for “barren” or “sparse.” This contrast between barrenness and depth defines their sound: powerful and bass-heavy, yet at the same time ethereal. Their music evokes vast, rugged landscapes where desolation and hope intertwine.

Instrumental post-rock and post-metal/doom often lean either toward immersive atmospheres or pure heaviness, which frequently leads to predictability. To break this pattern, Marius Jung founded rýr in 2018 with the goal of combining powerful rhythms and dynamic riffs without sacrificing atmosphere. Since then, the band has evolved significantly: they have played over 70 live shows in Germany and Europe and released two albums that have been very well received in the scene.

The band currently consists of three members, joined by Eric Knoop on drums and Florian Fricke on bass. The band’s logo—a root—symbolizes resilience and growth despite adverse circumstances; a theme that is also reflected in their compositions. Atmospheric layers of sound meet powerful riffs, creating soundscapes that oscillate between overwhelming intensity and dreamlike expanses.

Tracks like “Trajectory” from their second album illustrate this balance by blending powerful rhythms with haunting melodies.
