In die Sonne schauen

In the organizer's words:

The Dortmund+Cologne International Women's Film Festivalis wrapping up the summer in Dortmund with a very special cinematic experience: in cooperation with Filmnächte Dortmund, we're screening *In die Sonne schauen*.

The award-winning film *In die Sonne schauen* by young filmmaker Mascha Schilinski tells a cross-generational story about the lives of four women on an old farm in the Altmark region. The film takes us through the 20th century and the stories of Alma (1910s), Erika (1940s), Angelika (1980s), and Nelly (2020s), whose lives are eerily intertwined.

Alma tries to unravel the mystery of her sister, who died young; Erika discovers her own sexuality in the midst of World War II; and Angelika—by now living in a village in the GDR—tries to break free from the confines of her family. In the 2020s, a girl named Nelly moves with her parents from Berlin to the farm, which is in need of renovation, and is haunted by intense dreams and an unconscious burden. Thus, the present and the future blur in this masterpiece of interwoven storytelling about transgenerational connections.

“A film that burrows deep into our perception and stages sensation precisely where feeling is most fleeting: in the rapidly fading sense of time.” (Neue Visionen)

*Looking into the Sun* has received the following awards, among others:

Best Cinematography, Best Sound Design, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup, German Film Award.
