GET CARTER
JACK SETS THE SCORE STRAIGHT
UK 1971 · 112 min · Original version with subtitles · digital DCP · Rated 18 · Dir./Screenplay: Mike Hodges · Cinematography: Wolfgang Suschitzky · Starring: Michael Caine, Ian Hendry, Britt Ekland, John Osborne, Tony Beckley, and others
London gangster Jack Carter travels to his hometown of Newcastle to investigate the circumstances surrounding his brother’s death. At first, the death is treated as an accident, but he has his doubts and begins to conduct his own investigation. The closer he gets to the truth, the more ruthlessly he proceeds, settling scores with those responsible.
*Get Carter* is considered one of the most influential examples of so-called “British crime cinema.” The film is characterized by its sober, realistic style and its bleak atmosphere, which stands in stark contrast to more glamorous portrayals of the gangster genre. Particularly noteworthy are the unsparing portrayal of the underworld and the consistently pessimistic underlying tone. Thanks to its authentic perspective on violence, power structures, and morality, the film became an important point of reference for later works in the genre and continues to enjoy cult status to this day.
