Social developments do not leave the world of comics untouched. October 7 and the increasingly brazen public display of antisemitism have prompted us to examine how the world of comics addresses the Shoah. The Vienna-based publisher bahoe books, as part of its focus on historical and sociopolitical comics, places special emphasis on comics about Jewish culture and the Holocaust. We are therefore pleased to present a selection of these comics to the Bremen audience at Raum404.

With this exhibition, we at Kulturnetz e.V. are combining our expertise in the field of comics with a stance on the current social climate. The exhibition highlights comics as an artistic genre, but also views them as a space where socially relevant discussions take place. On the one hand, we examine the genre itself, focusing on its internal developments and questions. On the other hand, we view the comic genre as a narrative medium. As such, it is part of the discursive space where content takes center stage. The comics on display deal with the history of the Holocaust and thus contribute a piece to the mosaic of the history of the State of Israel and its formation. They also shed light on the background of Jewish life in Germany and Europe. Furthermore, they reveal mechanisms of antisemitism that can be useful for understanding the current situation.

The following comics will be presented

The Children of Buchenwald

Memories of the Shoah

The Children of Izieu

Living and Dying in Auschwitz

Jan Karski – Witness to the Shoah
