The last photo Jessie took shows the sun over Berlin. It hangs there as if nothing had happened. But things have changed. Jessie’s single mother, Ella, now goes on vacation only with Jessie’s little sister, Melli. And with Lux. Lux is Jessie’s boyfriend. Or at least he used to be. The unexpected trio finds itself on a family vacation that may never have actually happened. Under the shimmering sun of Tenerife, memory and the present become inextricably intertwined. Ghosts are everywhere. Director Sandra Wollner tells the story—which at first seems mundane—of a family experiencing a sudden rupture. What initially moves the viewer through its ordinariness then stirs the soul in a hypnotic way. A film that’s hard to describe, that tells its story in a way all its own and lets the audience sense things that are beyond comprehension. This is certainly due in no small part to Gregory Oke behind the camera, who, with *AFTERSUN*, evoked emotions like few other films have in recent years.

A tragedy brings a mother, daughter, and teenage boy together. Struggling with blame and forgiveness, the unlikely trio takes a trip to Tenerife for a family vacation that never happened. Under the glow of the sun, the past and present quietly begin to overlap. Director Sandra Wollner and the cinematographer of AFTERSUN have created a stunning film full of emotion.
