Isolationsgemeinschaft by Isolationsgemeinschaft

The fact that politically bleak times give rise to a bleak sound has been clearly evident in recent years in Berlin’s thriving post-punk underground scene. One offshoot of this scene is a duo with the beautifully contradictory name Isolationsgemeinschaft. “Start. Stop. Zurück” is the title of the band’s third and most recent album; its sound is reminiscent of ’80s minimal and dark wave bands like DAF, Stahlnetz, or Die Gesunden.

Dark synthesizer pads meet chugging drum machines, often accompanied by monotonous, jagged spoken-word vocals. In their lyrics, C. Demand and J. Silverfox—as the two artists call themselves—grapple with the fragile present.

“The house is collapsing from within/ I give up, I’m moving out” is the chorus of “Risse,” for example, whose title speaks for itself. The same goes for “Demagogie,” which deals with the completely brutalized climate of debate in our times and the witch hunts on social media (“And fear continues to be stoked/ Threats are staged […] Language is shaped by hate/ Us against them”).
