Even if one can’t claim that Pedro Almodóvar is reinventing himself in what is now his 25th film, if you appreciate him, his films, and the world in which they are set, it’s a true joy to once again be entertained in a gently melodramatic way.

Two time periods and two perspectives intertwine to create a multi-layered interplay between reality and fiction: After her mother’s death, Elsa, a successful commercial director, throws herself into her work without allowing herself time to grieve. In another time period in the same city, the successful writer and director Raúl Durán—who is battling a long creative crisis—is working on his new project—and is writing the very story that recounts Elsa’s life.
