Parties in Darmstadt - the city of science dances
Darmstadt calls itself a city of science, and yes, the TU Darmstadt, the Fraunhofer Institute and all kinds of other smart institutions are at home here. But between formulas, research and student council meetings, there is still plenty of energy left over in this city, and that energy ends up on the city's dancefloors. Darmstadt has a club scene that benefits from its university DNA: young, open, surprisingly diverse and with some institutions that have been shaping nightlife for decades. Anyone going out here on a Friday or Saturday night will quickly realize that the events calendar is well filled and that the city knows how to put on a good night out together. The absolute legend among Darmstadt's party venues is the Goldene Krone in Schustergasse: a living institution for over 30 years, open daily from 1 p.m., with a disco, rock bar, small live stage, table football and billiards all under one roof. Here you can find rock, punk, reggae and metal, and the audience is an honest cross-section of the city's society, from students to regular locals who were there when the Krone was still young. The Schlosskeller, which has been run by the AStA of TU Darmstadt since 1966, is located nearby, making it one of the longest-serving student clubs in Germany. Fresh, because it has just celebrated its 60th anniversary, and yet never outdated: Parties, salsa evenings and concerts alternate in the Schlosskeller, with admission often free or for little money. This is subculture in action, and you can tell that the focus here is not on profit, but on atmosphere. For those who prefer a more mainstream club night with electronic beats and R&B, the Musikpark A5 on Gräfenhäuser Straße is the right address: stylish ambience, active bar and an audience that comes to dance and not to watch. If you want something more cultural between club visits, the Centralstation is the place to go. It hosts concerts ranging from jazz to rock to pop, regularly brings international acts to the city and is also used for party nights. For salsa fans, the Schlosskeller with its Kellatino evenings every Thursday is the fixed point of the week: salsa and bachata from 9:30 pm, Latin hits and reggaeton from midnight. Darmstadt is a city where studying and partying have gone hand in hand for decades, and you can see that in the scene. It is authentic, affordable and has personality.
