By Nicolas Winding Refn,
with Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac.
In 2011, cult Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn ("Pusher", "Only God Forgives") made his impressive Hollywood debut with this hyper-stylized blend of violence, music, and striking imagery, which represents a fully realized vision of arthouse action. The film follows Driver (Gosling; "LaLa Land", "Blade Runner 2049"), a skilled Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver for criminals. Though he projects an icy exterior, lately he's been warming up to a pretty neighbor named Irene (Mulligan; "Promising Young Woman", "The Great Gatsby") and her young son. When Irene's husband gets out of jail, he enlists Driver's help in a million-dollar heist. The job goes horribly wrong, and Driver must risk his life to protect Irene and her son from the vengeful masterminds behind the robbery. Action and smarts don't necessarily go hand-in-hand, but Refn deftly blends them both in this phenomenally entertaining movie that employs a haunting soundtrack, clever direction and impressive characters, while burning ice-cold with hypnotic slow-motion, effortless coolness and stylish intelligence.
