Die Balearic Sunday-Saison startet und das ist doch mal eine gute Nachricht. Denn ein paar positive Vibes können wir alle gut gebrauchen. Zwei Chancen (eventuell sogar drei, aber psst erstmal) also in 2026, um nochmal darüber zu debattieren, was denn Balearic eigentlich ist. These 1: Das musikalische Äquivalent von glitzerndem Sonnenlicht auf einer Wasseroberfläche. These 2: Ein ewiges Ibiza, Anfang der 80er. These 3: Das eklektischste Genre der Tanzmusik. These 4: Alles zwischen Acid, Afro, Cosmic, Disco, Italo, Post Punk, Reggae, Wave, Zouk und allen möglichen Proto-Tanzmusik-Genres von Chicago bis zum Gardasee. These 5: Gar kein Genre, sondern eine Überzeugung, Menschen mit gut gelaunter Musik zum Tanzen zu bringen, die eben nicht super gleichförmig daherkommt.

Am Ende spielt das für das pure Vergnügen natürlich alles keine Rolle, wenn Karolina Bnv ihre Interpretation unter die Leute bringt, die von ihren Anfängen in einer Rockband in Nowosibirsk genauso informiert ist wie von ihrer Vorliebe für jackenden House und Electro. Das ZMAR Festival wiederum buchstabiert den balearischen Vibe nun schon seit einigen Jahren in einem tschechischen Steinbruch ganz in der Nähe Als kleinen Teaser für die diesjährige Ausgabe vom 7. bis 9. August schickt es Mike H. und Divný útvar als ZMAR Soundsystem vorbei. Und Balearic Sunday-Host Philipp Demankowski legt wie immer ganz am Anfang einen umfassenden Definitionsvorschlag vor. Was zu beweisen sein wird.

The Balearic Sunday season is kicking off — and that’s definitely good news. Because we could all use a few positive vibes right now. Two chances (maybe even three, but let’s keep that quiet for now) in 2026 to once again debate what Balearic actually is. Theory 1: the musical equivalent of glittering sunlight on the surface of the sea. Theory 2: an eternal Ibiza in the early ’80s. Theory 3: the most eclectic genre in dance music. Theory 4: everything between acid, afro, cosmic, disco, italo, post-punk, reggae, wave, zouk, and every conceivable proto-dance genre from Chicago to Lake Garda. Theory 5: not a genre at all, but a conviction — getting people dancing with positive music that refuses to sound overly uniform.

In the end, none of that really matters for the sheer pleasure of it all once Karolina Bnv delivers her interpretation to the crowd — one informed as much by her beginnings in a rock band in Novosibirsk as by her love for jacking house and electro. Meanwhile, the ZMAR Festival has been spelling out the Balearic vibe for several years now in a Czech quarry not far from here. As a little teaser for this year’s edition from August 7–9, it’s sending over Mike H. and Divný útvar as the ZMAR Soundsystem. And, as always, Balearic Sunday host Philipp Demankowski will kick things off with a comprehensive attempt at defining it all. Which remains to be proven.
