'Noting Absence' - A participatory performance by Anke Buchmann (ArtSpring Open Studios)

As part of the tenth anniversary celebration of the ArtSpring Festival – on Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31, 2026, I open my studio located at Sredzkistr. 46, 10435 Berlin.
 

The exhibition presents sculptures, process studies, and drawings that explore the intersection of somatic abstraction and autograph gesture. The central element of the exhibition is the participatory performance "Noting Absence." In a four-hour cycle, I activate my body by shaping clay bowls, radically synchronizing breath and gesture with the aim of remaining in full mental presence. Only those objects created in complete unity of body and mind will be preserved. All others will be dropped, forming a sculptural installation on the floor that reveals the absent mind.

Visitors are invited to sit on the chair opposite and explore their own stillness and emptiness through contact with the material.

An interactive performance that I will now present for the fourth time, following previous performances in London and Berlin, and for the first time in my Berlin studio during artspring.

About the artist
Anke Buchmann (born in Germany) combines ceramics, performance, and sculptural research to investigate identity and somatic memory. After studying at Central Saint Martins (UAL) and the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), she developed her practice as a form of quiet resistance to the logic of optimization prevalent in our time. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the British Ceramic Biennial, Ceramic Art London, and in the Wellcome Collection. She is a member of the BBK Berlin (Professional Association of Visual Artists).
