The Ruhrtriennale is the international festival of the arts that takes place annually in late summer in the Ruhr region. For around a month, artists from all over the world perform in outstanding buildings of industrial heritage - including halls, coking plants and engine houses of the former mining and steel industry. These locations become impressive stages for music theater, drama, dance, performance, concerts and visual arts. The selection of venues follows the thematic ideas of the respective season. The Jahrhunderthalle Bochum, the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein in Essen are particularly important. With their size and history, they have a decisive influence on the festival - as spaces of artistic transformation and as places of identification for the Ruhr region.

The Ruhrtriennale 2026 will take place from 20 August to 20 September. The director of the Ruhrtriennale 2024-2026 is the Belgian theater director Ivo Van Hove.
