Mieczysław Weinberg's opera "The Passenger" is an exceptional case in music theater: a work that tells of memory, guilt and the struggle for truth with unembellished clarity. Under the direction of Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra dedicates itself to this rarely performed score with the emotional precision for which the conductor is internationally admired. Her deep understanding of Weinberg's musical dramaturgy was recently impressively confirmed: At the "Salzburg Festival", critics celebrated her conducting of Weinberg's opera "The Idiot" as "radically transparent", "shatteringly concentrated" and "of a psychological alertness that transformed the orchestra into a breathing narrator". These qualities now also characterize her interpretation of "The Passenger" - an approach that makes the emotional fractures and underlying tensions of the work almost physically palpable.
