Vernissage - Democratic Encounters: Harare & Munich

In the organizer's words:

"Democratic Encounters: Harare & Munich" opens on Thursday, June 18, at 19:00. The evening will begin with an introduction by artistic director Kalas Liebfried and curator Zakirah Rabaney, followed by artist presentations by Miriro Mwandiambira, Grace Nyahangare and Gresham Tapiwa Nyaude at Forecast, the shop-location of Lothringer 13.

The exhibition includes paintings, installations and performance documentations and brings together works shaped by the observations, tensions and resonances that emerged during an exchange period in which the Zimbabwean artists lived and worked as artists in residence in Munich from April to June 2026. Together, the presentations reflect the possibilities and complexities of artistic exploration beyond geographical, political and cultural borders.

Based on the 30th anniversary of the city partnership between Munich and Harare, "Democratic Encounters" takes this long-standing civil society and diplomatic relationship as its starting point. Between April and June 2026, artists Mwandiambira, Nyahangare and Nyaude engaged with the Munich art scene and explored how artistic research and transnational exchange can negotiate forms of participation rooted in reciprocity and democratic encounters.
