Remembered, Not Real (Klasse Olia Lialina, Merz Akademie)
In the organizer's words:
A simple line of code, the sound of a system beep, the end of a game, the endless, almost forgotten collection of open tabs - some memories do not belong to any particular place. They emerge between everyday life and simulation, between the physical environment and virtual experience. Remembered, Not Real approaches these experiences as part of a present in which digital cultures have long since helped to shape our perception, relationship and idea of reality. The exhibition brings together artistic positions from Olia Lialina's class at the Merz Akademie Stuttgart that follow the traces, forms and narratives of the digital and use them to create active spaces of experience and possibility.
The exhibited works open up perspectives on the history and the present of the digital. They lead through worlds that rely on repetition and optimization, turn the browser into a stage, reconstruct memories from fragments, examine digital economies and make the elementary building blocks of the web tangible in a new way. This results in material translations of digital processes, such as the modification of a games console or a physical "Submit" button detached from the online interface. Between play, reflection and criticism, a panorama of the digital emerges, which becomes visible as an open process - as a multi-layered medium in flux, characterized by its beginnings as well as by the transformations of the present.
